Mamata Banerjee alleges BJP’s imprisonment of opposition leaders ahead of elections

SANTIPUR, 1 FEB: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, today, in her address at a public distribution program at Santipur in Nadia, accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of resorting to tactics of imprisoning opposition leaders to secure victory in the upcoming general elections. This assertion comes in the wake of her Jharkhand counterpart, Hemant Soren, being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged land scam case.

Miss Banerjee asserted her resilience in the face of such pressures, declaring that even if she were incarcerated, she would emerge steadfast. “BJP is putting everyone in jail only to win the election,” she proclaimed, echoing sentiments of political persecution.

Despite her party’s eagerness to forge an alliance with the Congress for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state, Miss Banerjee lamented the rejection of her proposal by the grand old party. She accused Congress of aligning with the CPI-M to inadvertently aid the BJP’s electoral prospects.

“We desired an alliance, but the Congress did not agree. They have joined forces with the CPI-M to assist the BJP in the elections,” she asserted, announcing her party’s decision to contest the elections independently once again.

Miss Banerjee emphasized her commitment to the welfare of the people, promising to prioritize their interests over political alliances. She likened the transient promises of the BJP to the seasonal arrival of cuckoos in spring, contrasting it with her party’s year-round dedication to serving the populace.

Addressing the gathering, she expressed confidence in forming the government in Delhi with the support of the people.

“Trinamul Congress is well enough to fight alone. If I am here and you all support me, I assure you that we will form the government in Delhi,” she stated emphatically.

“They (BJP) come before the election like spring’s cuckoo and propose to do many things for you, but after the election, they leave you,” she remarked, raising a finger at the BJP’s track record.

“We stay with you around 365 days, so whom you choose in the election,” she added, urging the electorate to stand by those who demonstrate unwavering commitment.

The statement comes amidst heightened political activity as parties gear up for the impending polls. The TMC’s decision to go solo reflects its confidence in its organizational strength and popular support in the state.

In a direct attack on both Congress and CPI-M, Miss Banerjee rallied her supporters, exclaiming, “We will win Delhi. Bengal will show the way.” She reaffirmed her party’s determination to fight alone in Bengal, distancing herself from alliances that do not align with her vision.

During the event, Miss Banerjee inaugurated numerous developmental projects worth Rs 753 crore, aimed at improving infrastructure and healthcare facilities in the state. She assured the gathered crowd of the tangible benefits these projects would bring to the populace, emphasizing her administration’s commitment to inclusive growth.

Furthermore, Miss Banerjee criticized the Border Security Force (BSF), alleging overreach in distributing inner-line cards to residents in border areas. She instructed local authorities to take charge of such distribution, asserting BSF’s mandate solely for border security.

Towards the end of her address, Miss Banerjee urged those affected by non-payment of funds under major schemes to join her sit-in demonstration in Kolkata starting from 2 February. She reiterated her solidarity with the people and urged them to stand together in demanding their rights.

After completing her rallies in Murshidabad, Miss Banerjee spent the night at Krishnagar Circuit House before continuing her campaign fervor the today.

Beginning her day with zeal, Miss Banerjee conducted a vibrant rally at Palpara, where she engaged with enthusiastic supporters and walked along the roadside, interacting with locals for nearly two kilometers. The spontaneous exchange of words with the people underscored Miss Banerjee’s grassroots connect and her penchant for direct engagement with the electorate.

Following the rally at Palpara, Miss Banerjee proceeded to Santipur to participate in a public distribution program. Amidst cheers and a warm welcome from residents, she conducted another energetic rally, addressing the gathered crowd with her characteristic fervor.
