KOLKATA, 24 MAR: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday visited violence-hit Bogtui village in Birbhum’s Rampurhat and met the families of the victims.
She handed over cheque of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of those killed in violence, while also announcing Rs 2 lakh compensation for rebuilding the scorched houses and jobs to the victims’ families.
The Chief Minister said that she would ensure “speedy justice” to the families. “The moment I came to know about the arson, I asked state minister Firhad Hakim to rush to the spot and take stock of the incident,” she added.
Miss Banerjee also sought a report from the state DGP as to why there was a delay in sending police force after the cops had received complaints from the village residents.
She asked the DGP that the the Trinamool block president Anarul Hossain to either surrender before the court or should be arrested.
Later, Anarul Hossain was arrested by police after CM demanded his arrest.
Going hard on the state police, the Chief Minister asked DGP to remove the SDPO, the Investigation Officer and the Inspector In-Charge had not followed their duty diligently. “Police will ensure that the strictest punishment is handed out to culprits responsible for Rampurhat carnage. The case filed before the court should be water-tight,” she added.
After meeting the families that were affected by the violence, ‘CM handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of those killed and announced government jobs for them.
She also announced a financial aid of Rs 2 lakh for reconstructing the damaged houses and Rs 1 lakh to for the medical treatment of those injured.
The Chief Minister alleged that there was a “big conspiracy” behind the killings. “I never believed something so barbaric can happen in modern Bengal. Mothers and children were killed. Your family members died but my heart has been crushed…,” she said, while being surrounded by family members and relatives of those killed.
The Chief Minister also instructed the police to ensure that all those residents who had left the village in fear return and they be provided security.
Later in the day, Miss Banerjee also visited the district hospital where the injured were being treated. “I wanted the victim to be flown to Kolkata, but the travelling would have aggravated the injuries. Hence, I have sought for a team of doctors to be sent here,” she said, while adding that the State would bear the entire cost of treatment.
