Mamata Banerjee to take oath as Bengal CM for third time and BJP to hold nationwide ‘dharna’ against ‘widespread violence’ on 5 May

KOLKATA, 3 MAY: Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee will be sworn in as the chief minister of West Bengal for the third time on 5 May at Raj Bhavan. The oath-taking ceremony, however, will be low-key affair owing to the unprecedented rise in Covid case.

On the same day, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold a “nationwide dharna” against “widespread violence” unleashed by the Trinamul Congress (TMC) soon after its victory in the recently held West Bengal assembly elections.

BJP’s national president JP Nadda will be in West Bengal on a two-day visit on May 4 and 5, in view of the “widespread post results retributive violence unleashed on BJP workers and supporters by criminal elements in the TMC cadre.” The party tweeted, “He will be visiting families of the affected karyakartas.”

Earlier, Banerjee tendered her resignation from the office of the chief minister to the governor following norms.

“CM @MamataOfficial called on me and submitted her resignation as CM and the same has been accepted. She has been requested to continue till alternative arrangements are made,” Dhankhar tweeted.

The MLAs of the TMC unanimously elected Banerjee as the legislative party leader at a meeting here, its secretary-general Partha Chatterjee said.

The TMC legislators also elected Biman Banerjee, the speaker in the outgoing House, as the pro-tem speaker in the new Assembly.

“The newly-elected members will take oath in the Assembly from 6 May,” Chatterjee told reporters at the party headquarters here after the meeting of the legislators.

The TMC came to power for the third time in a row in West Bengal, pocketing 213 of the 292 assembly seats that went to polls, while its main challenger, the BJP, bagged 77 seats.
