KOLKATA, 24 JAN: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is all set to address a public meeting in UP in favour of Swamajwadi Party on 8 February and hold a press conference with SP leader Akhilesh Yadav.
Kiranmoy Nanda, former Rajya Sabha MP of Samajwadi Party recently met Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat party office and held a meeting with her for almost two hours.
After the meeting, Mr Kiranmoy Nanda told the reporters that Miss Banerjee has agreed to campaign for Akhilesh Yadav and his Samajwadi Party.
She will hold a joint Press conference with Akhilesh Yadav on 8 February at Lucknow and will address the masses across the state virtually along with Akhileshji, Mr Nanda said.
Mr Nanda alleged that the Yogi government is not allowing any public meeting or roadside meeting or road show by the Oppositions.
“Police are camping in front of our party office in Lucknow. So we are forced to do all our campaigns across UP through social media, virtually and through posters and hoardings,” said Mr Nanda.
He said, “Mamata Banerjee will also hold another meeting at Varanasi for SP candidates but the date is yet to be fixed.”
“Mamata Banerjee is not only the chief minister of Bengal but she is the face of the Opposition,” Mr Nanda said. “We want Mamata Banerjee to campaign for us as she had single handedly taken head-on with the BJP in 2021 Assembly poll in Bengal and defeated them. In entire UP, this time there is anti-BJP wave,” he said.
Asked whether Trinamul Congress will contest from any seats in UP, Mr Nanda said, “no, Trinamul chief Mamata Banerjee said this time Trinamul Congress will not contest in UP but will help Akhileshji to win this Assembly poll.
Earlier, Miss Banerjee spoke to Akhilesh Yadav over phone but “all our phones were tapped,” alleged Mr Nanda. So I’ve come all the way to invite Mamata Banerjee.”
In last Assembly poll 2021 in Bengal, Akhilesh Yadav extended his full support to Mamata Banerjee and sent his Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachhanji to campaign for Trinamul Congress. She held many roadshows for Trinamul Congress candidates. Even Kiranmoy Nanda campaigned for Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram.
