KOLKATA, 30 APRIL: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee during her two day visit to Delhi today attended Prime Minister’s meeting with CJI of Supreme Court along with other Chief Justices of high courts and state chief ministers.
It is learnt that the chief minister during tea break met Prime Minister Narendra Modi for five minutes. First she was seen talking to both CJI and PM and later to Prime Minister only and reportedly placed some demands for West Bengal.
Though the chief minister declined to comment on her meeting with the PM, it is learnt that she has demanded for a second campus of Calcutta High Court at Rajarhat and fill up the vacancies of Calcutta High Court judges.
It is learnt that the chief minister Mamata Banerjee may raise various issues to the Prime Minister including the state owes to Centre about Rs 98,000 crore. She also may request the Prime Minister to cut down fuel prices as it is escalating the prices of essential commodities.
It came out in discussion that 54.64% increase in pendency in district courts since 2016. There are only 20 judges per 10 lakh population, which is highly inadequate to deal with the rising trend of litigations. There is a shortage of 6,000+ judges, including 5,000+ in the lower courts.
The Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said, “While discharging our duties, we all must be mindful of the Lakshman Rekha. The judiciary would never come in the way of governance if it is in accordance with law. We share your anxiety and concern regarding the welfare of the people”.
