The storm which the locals described as mini tornado caused extensive damage to the network in the locality.

The wind was so strong that it uprooted large trees and electricity poles. Several houses were damaged. Sandeep Mishra, BDO and panchayat members went to Sultanpur to check the situation.

Biswajit Mana, a local resident, said, “Within couple of minutes, everything has been destroyed. Multiple trees were uprooted. The electricity poles also fell into the ground. As a result, the whole village went without electricity last night.”

He also said, “I have never seen such a storm in such a short tim. There was no way to understand anything in the dark. We only assessed the damages in the morning.”

When asked, Mr Mishra said, “I have inspected the area soon after the news came to me. A strong wing hit the area for a short period of time but the situation is not conducive for relief now. But I have asked the police that if there is a need for relief, they should deliver it.”

The met department had already issued yellow and orange alerts of possible impact of western disturbances for the states of Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Bihar from 11 January to 13 January. As a result, a light to moderate rainfall coupled with thunderstorm lashed the Sultanpur area along with other parts of south Bengal.
