The Forest officials first tranquilised the creature and then managed to cage in the full grown male monkey that was deserted by its group since the day of Holi after the local young enthusiasts painted it’s head in red.

The Forest officials learnt that the leader of the group deserted the monkey since the day it was painted. Even today morning, the villagers said, the group leader hounded out the monkey. The Divisional Forest Officer, Bankura (North), Kalyan Rai said: “The monkey was caged as a preventive measure so that it cannot bite others. It’ll be kept under observation for some days and if anything odd isn’t detected, it will be released in a deep jungle area.”

Eighty two year-old Kanailal Kundu of Lalpur village in Gangajalghanti PS area went out of his house to buy bread. As stated by the eye-witnesses Parbaticharan Maji, Tanmoy Mondal: “The monkey was probably hungry and tried to snatch the bread from the old man. When the man tried to resist, it scratched the elderly man badly and bit him on the right leg. He screamed and fell on the ground.” The locals shifted the victim to the Gangajalghanti block hospital where he died due to excessive bleeding.

An 11 member team of Forest staffs arrived the village and captured it.
