KOLKATA, 6 MAY: More than 150 Trinamul MLAs and some BJP MLAs came to the Assembly today to participate in swearing-in ceremony.
In the midst of Covid, the oath taking ceremony took place in the House and not in the Council’s chamber so that everyone can maintain Covid protocol.
Protem Speaker Subrata Mukherjee administered the Office of Oath to Trinamul heavy weights like Partha Chatterjee, Firad Hakim, Aroop Biswas, Jyotipriya Mullick.
Former Bengal minister Suvendu Adhikari, who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in December last year and managed to make a dent in the electoral success of the Trinamul Congress (TMC) by defeating chief minister Mamata Banerjee at East Midnapore’s Nandigram seat, was also sworn in as MLA.
Trinamul MLAs from the film world also came to Assembly to take oath. June Maliya who won from Midnapore, Kanchan Mullick from Uttarpara, Soham Chakroborty from Chandipur, Lovely Moitra, Sonarpur (South), Aditi Munshi from Rajarhat Gopalpur all were present at the state Assembly and took oath in their turns.
The former Commissioner of Chandannagore, Humayun Kabir, who resigned and won against BJP’s Bharati Ghosh at Debra was also present at the oath taking ceremony.
Trinamul MP from Rajarhat (NewTown) Tapash Chatterjee along with other leaders of North 24 Parganas, Partha Bhowmik from Naihati, Nirmal Ghosh from Panihati and Madan Mitra from Kamarhati, Firdousi Begun from Sonarpur (North) were also present.
Dr Ratna Dey Nag who lost Hooghly seat in 2019 Lok Sabha poll won from Pandua seat as MLA and today came to the Assembly to participate in the oath taking.
When asked about the visit of a team from Union ministry of home affairs to look into the post poll violence, he said, “Just after 24 hours, the new government came to power, the Centre has sent a team. The Centre should enquire about vaccine, about oxygen, life saving drugs but they cannot digest the defeat and also to divert attention from Covid situation they are spreading fake news on violence.”
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee attended the ceremony for a short while before leaving for Nabanna. The oath-taking ceremony will continue till Saturday.
