KRISHNAGAR, 31 JAN: Ahead of the municipal election, the ruling lobby of Trinamul Congress inaugurated the much-awaited drinking water project at a programme held near JalKal in Krishnagar, today.
The project, which was initiated in 2017 with an investment of Rs 71 crore, was inaugurated by the Nadia district magistrate Shashank Sethi. In the programme, Naresh Das, chairperson of the Krishnagar municipal administrative board, Jayanta Saha, TMC’s Nadia North district committee president and SDO, Chitradeep Sen were present.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Mr Sethi said the project not only involved collecting and purifying water from Bhagirathi to make it fit for drinking but also construction of pipelines to supply to homes.
Mr Das said the much-awaited project has been completed today, but it will take 15 more days to supply water to existing connection holders because engineers and chemists will carry out experiments until the water is fit for drinking.
He also said that it has capacity to purify 31.48 million gallons per day (MGD), but this huge quantity of water will not be required at present. The project has been envisaged to make water supply sufficient to all habitants for more than two decades in future.
Mr Saha said the project has been implemented at the cost of Rs 71 crore. “Today is the historical day because Maa Ganga has entered Krishnagar. People will touch Maa Ganga today here. This has been possible as chief minister Mamata Banerjee had taken initiative to implement the project for the sake of Krishnagar people,” he said.
Criticising the inauguration, the BJP leader Sandip Majumdar said the Trinamul Congress has chosen to inaugurate the ‘apparently completed’ project ahead of the municipality polls on hopes to woo the people in their fold.
