KRISHNAGAR, 31 JULY: A 48-year-old police constable was found critically injured under mysterious circumstances inside an orchard near his house at Nazirapara under Kotwali police station limits in Krishnagar tonight.
Local residents first spotted him lying on the ground inside an orchard at around 6 pm and informed the police. The Kotwali police immediately rushed to the site and rescued him to the Saktinagar district hospital. The attending doctor said his condition is stable but he sustains severe facial injuries.
The police official said the attackers probably hit his face with a brick as they found brick dust at his face during his rescue from the incident site.
The cop named as Pritam Roy is currently posted in Nabadwip police station. He has now been assigned to serve his duty as a bodyguard of the ruling Trinamul Congress MLA Pundarikakshya Saha. During the last Assembly polls, he had served as a bodyguard of the Congress candidate Silvi Saha.
The police officials, however, have no clue why the policeman was critically beaten up by the attackers.
Pinky Roy, wife of the victim was also clueless about the incident. “For the last 15 days, he was in Nabadwip for his duty. Today, he called me over my cell phone that he was returning this afternoon. But, around 6 pm, I was informed that he was critically beaten up. I heard from my neighbours that a 21-year-old youth named as P K, a resident of the next Para (locality) beat him critically. But he had no enmity with him. I have no knowledge on who beat him up and why he was beaten up critically. I hope police will conduct a probe and the attackers will be punished.”
