KRISHNAGAR, 23 MAR: A contractual staff engaged at the Census section in the office of the district magistrate, Nadia has been arrested by the Kotwali police for allegedly withdrawing huge amount of money in different occasions by forging signature of the Census officer.
The man named as Manotosh Karmakar, dealing assistant of the Census section of the Nadia district collectorate office was picked up by the Kotwali police from the collectorate office at around 9 pm today.
The Census officer, Gobinda Haldar lodged an FIR with the Kotwali police (Memo No – 38/Census/Nadia, dated 23.03.2023) urging it to take necessary action against Karmakar as he forged his signature and has withdrawn a huge amount of money in different occasions from two bank accounts of the Census section.
Hours before the arrest, the Kotwali police were asked to seal the census section as the accused was found apparently guilty by the census officer.
According to the sources placed in the district collectorate office, Karmakar has withdrawn at around 37 lakhs in different occasions from two PNB accounts. Though, the officers declined to mention the exact amount of money the accused has withdrawn.
The sources also said Karmakar was a permanent staff and worked in different sections. He retired around seven years ago but he was engaged as a contractual staff in the collectorate.
During his tenure as a government employee, Karmakar was a very influential leader of the CPI-M backed employees union – Coordination Committee.
It is mentionable that the same unlawful act was done by an UDC clerk in the Nadia district collectorate office in 2019. At that time, the then district magistrate, Vibhu Goel lodged an FIR against an Upper Division Clerk with the Kotwali police for issuing different orders or letters to purchase additional firearms in the existing arms license by tempering of signature of higher authorities of the district.
In the complaint letter, Mr Goel had mentioned that a thorough verification of the matter was conducted and it has been found that Rajesh Roy, UDC of Nadia collectorate and the dealing assistant has made the illegal acts which are highly illegal offence in the government service.
In the complaint, Mr Goel had also said, “After verification of Issue Register maintained in the Judicial Munsikhana Section in the office of the District Magistrate, Nadia, it is found that the Memo numbers mentioned in the complaint does not match with the Register maintained in the Judicial Munsikhana Section”.
“On further enquiry it has been found that Shri Rajesh Roy, UDC engaged himself in unauthorized and unlawful forgery and he also issued false letters to purchase additional fire arms by way of tampering of signatures of the higher authorities of the district to the persons such as Jabbar Ali Mallick of Nasipur under Kaliganj police station limits, Raj Kumar Biswas of Madhabpur, Chapra and Hriday Kumar Biswas of Joyghata, Krishnaganj.
