KRISHNAGAR, 9 JULY: The Nadia district Left Front on Friday held a protest demonstration in front of the district magistrate office against the BJP-led central government for its role in price hike and rampant black marketing of essential commodities across the country even amid the pandemic.
The Left Front leaders were on protest with 12-point-charter of demands which include urgent measures for containing price-rise through universalisation of public distribution system and banning speculative trade in commodity market.
During the protest agitation, S M Sadi, the CPI-M Nadia district secretariat member said, “The prices of petroleum products have increased for a record 21 times in the past one and a half months. This in turn has led to the aggressive rise in prices of essential commodities due to increasing transportation costs.”
“Both, the prices of food crops and manufactured goods are witnessing a sharp expansion,” he added.
While speaking at the protest agitation, the LF leaders said the Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana is not sufficient and thus, each person should be given 10 kg foodgrain as ration. In addition to this, the families in need should also be provided with pulses, sugar, edible oil, etc.
The Left Front has also raised the demand of financial assistance of Rs 7,500 per month to each non-income tax paying family for a period of six months in order to tide over the pandemic-induced crisis.
Criticising the Central Government, the LF leaders also criticized the initiative allegedly taken by the Centre to bifurcate the state.
12-point-charter of demands:—
Urgent measures for containing price-rise through universalisation of public distribution system and banning speculative trade in commodity market
Containing unemployment through concrete measures for employment generation
Strict enforcement of all basic labour laws without any exception or exemption and stringent punitive measures for violation of labour laws.
Universal social security cover for all workers
Minimum wages of not less than Rs 15,000/- per month with provisions of indexation
Assured enhanced pension not less than Rs.3,000/- p.m. for the entire working population
Stoppage of disinvestment in Central/State PSUs
Stoppage of contractorisation in permanent perennial work and payment of same wage and benefits for contract workers as regular workers for same and similar work
Removal of all ceilings on payment and eligibility of bonus, provident fund; increase the quantum of gratuity.
Compulsory registration of trade unions within a period of 45 days from the date of submitting application; and immediate ratification of ILO Conventions C 87 and C 98
Stoppage of Pro Employer Labour Law Amendments
Stoppage of FDI in Railways, Insurance and Defence
In addition to these the central trade unions are also demanding the withdrawal of the Land Acquisition amendment bill/ordinance.
