KRISHNAGAR, 9 APRIL: A day before Ram Navami, police have arrested Anup Kumar Mondol, a prominent BJP leader, from Nakashipara on the charges of posting ‘shrewd words’ in the social media platforms tonight.
Tension gripped the locality soon after the news of his arrest spread. The BJP leaders and workers headed by Ranjan Adhikari, a former general secretary of BJP’s Nadia unit staged a protest demonstration in front of the Nakashipara police station at around 11 pm.
Mr Adhikari alleged that police have intentionally arrested Anup Mondol as he posted his criticism in the social media against Jane Alam, a key accused person of twin murder case at Magurhat in South 24 Parganas today. He wrote ‘dudhel gai’ in his criticism. Soon after his post, Nakashipara police called him in the police station. When he reached the police station, they pressured him to withdraw his post from the social media. He then deleted his post but the police then arrested him, he alleged.
Mr Adhikari also alleged that different persons often criticize by saying ‘dudhel gai’ during debates at different electronic news channels. But, police never arrested them while in this case; police became overactive and arrested him.
Coming down heavily on the Trinamul Congress, Mr Adhikari said, “Trinamul Congress leaders connived with the police planned to arrest Anup because they had information that Anup will join the Ram Navami rally slated tomorrow in Krishnagar. As many as 2000 people from Nakashipara will join the rally in Krishnagar. To resist them, the TMC leaders behaved cowardly by arresting our leader.”
