KRISHNAGAR, 31 JAN: A 62-year-old man died in a road accident when a passenger bus knocked him down and ran over, this afternoon. The incident occurred in front of the district collectorate office in Krishnagar town at around 2 pm.
Police official said the aged man died on the spot as his head went under the rear wheels of the moving bus. The deceased has been identified as Meghnath Chakraborty, a retired employee of Krishnagar municipality.
According to the police, the passenger bus of Krishnagar-Muragacha route was making a turn at the junction in front of the entrance gate of the district collectorate office when it hit the old retiree who was trying to cross the road. After being hit by the bus, the aged man fell down, but his head was dragged under the rear wheels of the moving bus.
On hearing the incident, police officials from Kotwali police reached the site and retrieved the body. The body was then sent to the Saktinagar district hospital for autopsy.
Locals and eyewitnesses alleged it was the complete lacuna on the part of the traffic police. Only two to four civic volunteers are normally posted for controlling traffic while the road is connected with several district-level offices including district collectorate office, zilla-parishad and SP office. This apart, officials, ministers and common people use this road every day for official works. Due to heavy traffic-flow, trained traffic officials should be deployed to control the vehicle movements.
