KOLKATA, 21 JUNE: The Oppositions today unanimously selected Yaswant Sinha as their Presidential candidate. Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee stated, “I would like to congratulate Shri Yashwant Sinha on becoming the consensus candidate, supported by all progressive opposition parties, for the upcoming Presidential Election.’
Trinamul’s national secretary, Abhishek Banerjee said, “A man of great honour and acumen, who would surely uphold the values that represent our great nation.”
He also stated, ‘Protecting India’s social fabric is of utmost importance. With that thought in mind, he also congratulated all like-minded parties for choosing YashwantSinha ji as the common candidate of Opposition parties for Presidential election.
Two senior leaders of Congress – Mr Jairam Ramesh and Mallikarjun Khagre pledged their support to Mr Yaswant Sinha. NCP chief Mr Sharad Pawar too pledged his support to Yaswant Sinha.
Yaswant Sinha who joined Trinamul Congress in December 2020 was made party’s vice president.
Today Abhishek Banerjee was present in the Oppositions meeting instead of party chairperson Mamata Banerjee.
She earlier referred NCP chief Sharad Pawar where the Oppositions agreed but Mr Pawar declined. Later, she also named Farooq Abdullah and Gopal Krishna Gandhi but both declined.
