“Citing the pandemic, Mamata Banerjee has suspended local train services while she is taking part in the bye-election. As a result, railways are losing crores of rupees as revenue and millions of passengers are suffering a lot every day. Even passengers often fall from the trains. So her drama should be stopped immediately for the sake of people and railway authorities should be allowed to resume local train services,” said Abhijit Das, a member of PAC.

Mr Das also said the PAC members have already written to the chief secretary of the state government urging him to allow the rail to resume the local train services in the state.

The seven-member team today visited Kalyani, Ranaghat, Krishnagar and Nabadwip stations and they inspected the facilities for passengers on platforms such as supply of drinking water, sitting arrangements for women, waiting halls, canteens, food stalls and the toilets on platforms.

Rathindra Bose, another PAC member said, “The Centre has sent us to inspect the facilities for passengers in the stations. After paying visits at different stations, we will make our reports before sending it as proposals to the railway authorities.”

In the seven-member team, two members hailed from West Bengal and other five members hailed from Assam, Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand. Basically, Railway Board has constituted a 25-member Passenger Amenities Committee in which seven members belong to the East Zone.
