PM Modi to address 66th Convocation of IIT, Kharagpur in virtual mode tomorrow

KHARAGPUR, 22 FEB: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the 66th Convocation of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur  tomorrow through video conferencing. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Institute of Medical Science and Research at IIT, Kharagpur.

The super specialty hospital and medical college has been set up by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur with support from the Union Ministry of Education. It will focus on robust biomedical, clinical and translational research, development of remote diagnosis, telemedicine, teleradiology along with research in drug and delivery.

The MBBS programme is expected to start from the academic year 2021-22 in addition to post-graduate and doctoral programmes.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Minister of State Sanjay Dhotre will also be present in the convocation.

The convocation will take place at the Netaji Auditorium of the prestigious institute.

In this one-of-a-kind Convocation event, seventy-five students including nine Institute Gold Medal winners and sixty-six Institute Silver Medal winners have been invited to receive the prestigious medals in person. However other students, totaling more than 2800, will be awarded degrees in online mode.

Talking about the e-Convocation, Director Professor Virendra K Tewari remarked, “This is a unique occasion for us; while we are welcoming the 2020 batch of alumni, we also feel for the students who would have to miss the cherished occasion. Being a former student myself, I can feel their disappointment and it was an extremely hard decision which I had to take, keeping in mind the welfare of the students. We will plan to organize an event to bring back this batch together at a later date when the pandemic subsides completely to let them have their moment of glory.”

The Institute will also confer DSc (Honoris Causa), IIT Kharagpur Life Fellow Award, and Distinguished Alumnus Award to twenty-seven achievers for their contribution to academics and research, social service and public welfare. Several of the recipients have arrived in person to receive the awards in person

The Institute will felicitate Shri Vinod Gupta, distinguished alumnus and philanthropist, US-based entrepreneur and former ambassador, Swami Atmapriyananda Maharaj, a monk of the Ramakrishna Order and Former Vice-Chancellor,  Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director, All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and Dr. Elattuvalapil Sreedharan, former Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) popularly known as the “Metro Man” with Honoris Causa in acknowledgement of their contribution to public welfare, social upliftment and India’s overall development. The Institute will also confer its coveted Life Fellow award on Shri Ranbir Singh Gupta, renowned architect, distinguished alumnus, US-based entrepreneur and philanthropist, and Prof. Mahan Mj (Swami Vidyanathananda), a monk of the Ramakrishna Order and eminent mathematician and Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai in acknowledgement of their contribution to academics, social service and public welfare.
