A 50-year-old BJP worker was lynched in front of his family members allegedly by a group of Trinamul Congress workers last night. The incident occurred at Vivekanada Palli under Gangnapore police station limits in Nadia.

Police said the deceased has been identified as Uttam Ghosh (50). His body has been sent to the Ranaghat hospital for autopsy.

According to the local residents, a group of TMC goons attacked the house of Uttam Ghosh and beat him mercilessly with sharp edge weapons. The BJP worker died on the spot. The attackers also beat the other family members of the victim and ransacked his house.

In Chakdaha, Trinamul Congress workers allegedly carried out an attack on the house of one Sankar Chakraborty at around 8 pm yesterday. They also ransacked his house and beat up his elder brother. During the attack, Sankar Chakraborty, a cardiac patient, became panicked. He started feeling cardiac pain also. Within minutes, he died because of cardiac arrest.

Locals alleged that when the family members and local BJP workers started arranging to cremate him, the attackers again appeared in the scene and threatened them in dire consequences if they carried the body to the crematorium.

For the night, the family members decided not to go to the burning ground for cremation, but today they found none of the male members in the locality carrying the body to the burning ground. Finally, the women members carried the body to the burning ground for cremation, a local resident said.

To protest against the attacks on the BJP workers at different police station areas in Ranaghat, Chakdaha, Santipur, Dhantala and Gangnapur, five BJP MLAs accompanied by the BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar rushed to the houses of the victims and talked with the family members. The BJP team also visited the police stations and urged the respective OCs and IC to take action against the culprits.

“We have informed the matters to the police officers of the different police stations and urged them to take appropriate steps so that BJP workers are not victimized by the TMC workers. We also urged them to maintain the law and order situation. We will go to the SP and DM tomorrow to lodge complaints against the attackers,” said Jagannath Sarkar, a BJP MP.
