MIDNAPORE, 21 FEB: IIT Kharagpur marked a significant milestone towards the vision of a prosperous and empowered India by 2047 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a momentous ceremony held on 20 February,  dedicated a series of infrastructure development projects worth approximately Rs. 230 crores to the nation, heralding a new era of growth and innovation.

The event, conducted both physically and virtually, was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office; Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, and other dignitaries, showcasing a collective commitment towards advancing India’s educational and technological landscape.

The infrastructure projects unveiled encompassed state-of-the-art facilities aimed at fostering academic excellence and providing unparalleled comfort to the students and faculty. Among the notable additions are two Girls’ Hostels named Savitri Bai Phule Halls of Residence, each boasting accommodation for 500 girls. These hostels, built at a cost of approximately 123 crores each, set new benchmarks in sustainable design, adhering to 3-star TERI GRIHA, LEED-Gold star, or IGBC-Gold star rating standards. Equipped with central air conditioning, solar water heating systems, and advanced security features, including CCTV surveillance, these hostels prioritize both environmental consciousness and student welfare.

Similarly, the Boys Hostel, named Atal Bihari Vajpayee Halls of Residence, offers 500 single-seater, air-conditioned rooms, embodying a commitment to inclusivity with barrier-free designs as per the Accessible India campaign. With facilities mirroring those of the girls’ hostels and built at a cost of approximately 62 crores, this hostel stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to providing world-class amenities to students across genders.

In addition to the hostel facilities, the infrastructure expansion includes the Annex building of the Chemical Engineering Department, a towering symbol of academic advancement and research excellence. With a plinth area of 7458 square meters and constructed at a cost of approximately 45 crores, this G+3 building houses cutting-edge laboratories for various disciplines, including Chemical Reaction Engineering, Fluid Flow, and Catalysis. The facility also features a common advanced computing laboratory accommodating 300 students simultaneously, underscoring its role as a hub for innovation and collaboration.

Prime Minister Modi’s unwavering commitment to transforming India into a global knowledge powerhouse was echoed by Dr. Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education, and other eminent personalities present at the ceremony. Their collective vision for a technologically empowered and intellectually vibrant India resonated throughout the event, reaffirming IIT Kharagpur’s position as a beacon of academic excellence and innovation on the global stage.
