KOLKATA, 9 JULY: Trinamul Kisan and Khet Mazdoor Committee’s president Purnendu Basu during a convention of the farmers asked them to launch a movement against the Centre’s Draconian Farm Laws and express their solidarity with the agitating farmers at Singhthu border and other places.
Mr Basu said, “We are demanding repealing of three Draconian Farm Laws and demanding law should be enacted for minimum support price (MSP) in this Parliament session to legalise this.”
He said the BJP Central leaders even the Prime Minister during their numerous election rallies have promised to pay the farmers of West Bengal Rs 18,000 for a period of three years under Krishan Nidhi scheme but after the election, all their promises have ‘vanished in the blue’.
The chief minister Mamata Banerjee also said that the state government has furnished all the details to the Centre so that the Centre can provide financial assistance to the farmers. But the centre is yet to release the money. Mr Basu termed this to be an election gimmick.
He said that the chief minister Mamata Banerjee has led full support to the cause of the farmers. After she became the chief minister for the third time, she met Bharat Kishan Union leader Rakesh Tilsit on this issue on 9 June at Nabanna.
He said, before election the state Assembly has already passed a resolution against these laws.
In December, when farmers first started agitating at Singethu border, Mamata Banerjee personally reached out to them lending her full support. She also sent a five-member MP delegation team headed by Derek O’ Brien, Rajya Sabha MP and party’s national spokesperson to meet the agitating farmers.
“The Centre’s indifference towards our farmer brethren is to be blamed for this situation,” he said.
Miss Banerjee earlier said, “I have said earlier, farmers’ rights cannot be compromised in any way and we will together fight every battle to uproot Bharatiya Janata Party along with their insensitive, miscalculated policies. We will work together in ensuring the safety & security of our farmer brothers and sisters.”
Mr Basu said, “Mamata Banerjee led state government also declared at length Krishak Bandhu scheme which the chief minister started in 2016 and as per our election manifesto , the farmers are integral part of our society, their welfare and quality of life are crucial to us. We will ensure that small and marginal farmers are provided Rs 10,000 per acre per annum.”
Mr Basu said, the farmers having one acre of land already received Rs 5,000 and in December, they will be paid Rs5,000 more.
He said that, “Our state government also provides pension to farmers who have reached the age 60.”
He said that the only Bengal government in the country pays the premium for the farmers for their crop insurance in case of natural disaster like cyclone, flood etc.
