KRISHNAGAR, 19 MAR: Tragedy has once again struck the football world, with a young promising football player from Krishnagar in Nadia who played in Calcutta Football League last year on behalf of Railway FC, died at the age of 26 years, today.
In an unfortunate incident, Debojyoti Ghosh, a promising midfielder while playing a football match on behalf of Krishnagar Central Club at Belpukur under Dhubulia police station limits, suffered a suspected cardiac arrest and passed away in the hospital.
Debojyoti Ghosh, a resident of Sukul Road in Krishnagar had been tipped to play for the Kolkata-giants East Bengal in the upcoming season. The dream was to play in the Kolkata League in a red-yellow jersey next season. That dream did not come true.
The 26-year-old played a pivotal role for his Calcutta Football League outfit Railway FC and helped them reach the final of CFL 2021-22. He was also awarded Man of the Match in three games this season.
Today, Debojyoti went to play at Belpukur on behalf of Krishnagar Central Club. He fell ill on the field during the game. “Five minutes before the end of the game, he suddenly fell ill. We ran to him and saw that his teeth were stuck. At first we tried to heal him with water and air. But, he couldn’t give any response,” said one of his teammates.
According to officials, he was taken to Dhubulia hospital but attending doctors referred him to Saktinagar district hospital in Krishnagar as his condition was critical. But the last defense did not play. Doctors there pronounced him dead.
A poll of gloom descended soon after news of his death spread in the locality. Debojyoti is the only child of his family and he struggled hard to reach Kolkata Maidan from an economically poor family. His untimely death has cast a shadow of mourning over the Krishnagar sports fraternity.
