“If the government eases the lockdown-like restrictions, we shall get a chance to earn some money daily. The relaxation, even if partial, would help us to support our families”, said Swarup Pramanik, owner of a hairstyle kiosk at Behrampore.

“During the last phases of lockdowns we were allowed to open our salons for some specified hours. Yet the Covid infections were well in check, especially in Murshidabad district. With the complete shutdown of our shops, we have lost our means of livelihood. We are not so wealthy that we can maintain family by staying idle at home. Things are so expensive in towns that it is tough to survive without decent income”, the hairstylist said.

Sporadic protest was reported today from different parts of the city. According to the protesters, complete closure of shops for a prolonged period is neither tenable nor desirable. Hairdressers today threatened to launch greater movement if their demands are not met, sources informed.
