Holding a press conference on both virtual and physical modes from the district collectorate office today, Mr Sethi said the by-elections will be held on 30 October along with other Assembly seats. The last date of nomination is 8 October and the last date of withdrawal of candidates is 16 October.

He also mentioned that all political parties should strictly adhere to the Code, which lays down a list of dos and don’ts for leaders and parties ahead of elections. Amongst other things, the code bars the government from announcing policy decisions.

The bypolls in Santipur was necessitated as Jagannath Sarkar, MP from Ranaghat who won from Santipur in the last Assembly polls, submitted his resignation to Speaker Biman Banerjee. He preferred to retain his parliamentary seat and resigned from the state legislative assembly. This left the seat vacant.

In Santipur, total number of electors is 254893 in which male electors are 131165, female -123724 and third gender electors are 4. A total of 4810 electors fall above 80 years of age while PWD electors are 1859.

Total numbers of polling stations are 355 which are similar to the number of polling stations in the last assembly polls, Mr Sethi said.

He also said the election campaign guidelines will be followed strictly as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India. “We are assessing the number of the vulnerable booths in the assembly area and it will be known a few days before the by-polls,: Mr Sethi added.
