Senior cops hurt, police vehicle ransacked in mob attack after accident in Chapra

KRISHNAGAR, 13 FEB: The death of a motorcyclist in a road accident sparked violence at Lakshmigacha under Chapra police station area in Nadia this evening.

A police vehicle was damaged and four police persons including an officer were injured by a mob that refused to let go of the body of the biker from the site.

Later, additional police contingents reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

According to local residents, Jahangir Sheikh (30) of Talukhuda was knocked down by a truck at Lakshmigacha on the Karimpur-Krishnagar state highway and died on the spot. Another man who was pillion rider got serious injuries during the accident and the police after being informed about the accident reached the spot and admitted the injured person in the Chapra block hospital.

But situation turned serious when the police officials further went to the spot to bring the body from the site. A group of local residents who demanded immediate arrest of the truck driver suddenly started closing in and pelted stones and bricks at the cops. The police tried to contain the situation, but the enraged mob ransacked the police vehicle.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Vidisha Kalita said, “A group of people attacked the police and ransacked the vehicle when our men went there to bring the body from the site. Four police persons including an officer, Sadekh Mollah have been injured. Sadekh has been admitted to the Chapra hospital as his condition is serious. We have collected the names of few people who attacked our men and damaged public property. We have already seized the truck and an FIR has been lodged against a few persons. We will take action against them”.
