MIDNAPORE, 1 AUGUST: With the flood water flowing downstream towards Ghatal from Daspur, Silabati river got more ferocious, flooding vast tracts of farmlands and villages along its course including Ghatal town.
As the torrential rain over the past three days continued, the Silabati river was in spate and it finally overflowed its bank inundating vast areas along its course in Ghatal. The river water today broke the guard wall of the Sub-divisional office and gushed into the entire building. Before it, the river water also inundated the Ghatal police station and Ghatal Correctional Home forcing the administration into the jittery.

Finally, the administration swung into action and a total of 61 prisoners were primarily shifted to the court barracks from where they were sent to the Midnapore correction home.
The administration has started repairing Silabati banks in several places. However, the district administration is skeptical about how much work will be done because water level is rising further even it continues to flow above the danger level.
As most roads are in under water, the traffic along the Chandrakona-Ghatal state highway has been closed. The entire Ghatal town has virtually become an isolated island. Although the water level in Daspur area has started receding, people are still suffering a lot. They alleged that there is huge scarcity of drinking water.
The Trinamul leader and saha-sabhadhipati of zilla-parishad Ajit Maity said, “We are inspecting all vulnerable areas to ensure relief materials be reached to the people. We are trying our best but some places are inaccessible. The administration has deployed NDRF teams for conducting rescue and relief operation in the vulnerable areas.”
Meanwhile, a Trinamul Congress party office collapsed in the Bisripat area of Midnapore Sadar block due to continuous rain. The party office was situated on the bank of a local Khal. Earlier, a few houses collapsed due to waterlogging.
