KRISHNAGAR, 10 DEC: Duttapulia, Nadia, is preparing to transform into one of India’s busiest sporting hubs this winter as the 47th Senior National Softball Championship gears up for a vibrant start on 14 December 2025. What began in late-19th-century America as a pastime played with a soft rubber ball will now see over a thousand of India’s finest athletes converge on a small Bengal town—an unusual yet compelling reminder of how far the sport has travelled.

According to West Bengal Softball Association president and former MLA Samir Kumar Poddar, this year’s championship is set to be one of the largest in the tournament’s history. “A total of 28 states are sending contingents—600 men and 600 women—who will compete over six days,” he said, underscoring the scale of participation that signals softball’s steady rise as a competitive sport across India.

The championship will be inaugurated with a colourful rally featuring all participating athletes, marking the formal opening on 14 December. The matches, to be held across multiple venues in the Duttapulia region, will continue until 18 December, when the event will conclude with a grand prize distribution ceremony.

Local organisers say preparations are in full swing—from accommodation and medical support to security arrangements—to ensure the rural pocket of Nadia can smoothly host a national-level sporting event of this magnitude. For many in the district, the championship is more than a competition; it is an opportunity to showcase Bengal’s organisational acumen and extend a warm welcome to players who represent the expanding footprint of softball in the country.

With India’s interest in softball steadily rising and states investing more deeply in grassroots talent, the 47th Senior Nationals promise not only spirited contests on the field but also renewed energy for a sport still carving out its space in India’s crowded athletic landscape, Mr Poddar said.
