Swimmer brother rescues younger from drowning after boat capsized in Bhagirathi river near Santipur

KRISHNAGAR, 9 JUNE: A swimmer saved his younger brother from drowning after they fell into Bhagirathi river near Nrisinghapur ghat in Santipur when their boat capsized.

Rafique Ali and Kamal Uddin, two brothers came at their sister’s house at Chutorpara in Santipur yesterday. They are residents of Purbo Satgachia in Kalna of Burdwan district.

After waiting for a boat to cross over from Nrisinghapur ghat to Kalna ghat, they finally got a boat and they boarded on it along with their motorcycles. After while, the boat started tilting and capsized. Two brothers and their motorcycles fell into the river.

As Rafique knows swimming, he rescued his younger to the shore and saved his life, a police officer said.

Due to pandemic situation, normal ferry services are being suspended, but the duo got a boat after a boatman agreed to go to Kalna ghat against an extra fare.

Later, Santipur police and local administration helped them to reach their house in Kalna and tried to fish out their vehicles from the river. Today, the police fished out the two motorcycles with the help of local divers and handed over the vehicles to them.
