KRISHNAGAR, 17 MARCH: In a tragic incident of medical negligence, a pregnant woman gave birth to stillborn twin babies at the Tehatta sub-divisional hospital in Nadia on Friday morning. The family members and relatives of the woman blamed the doctors and nurses for their negligence and gheraoed the hospital demanding immediate action against the medical staff.
The incident has caused tension in the area, and the police had to intervene to control the situation. The hospital authorities assured the family members that they would conduct a probe into the matter and take departmental action if anyone is found guilty.
According to local residents, Rekha Bibi, a pregnant woman of Avaynagar in Tehatta, was admitted to the hospital for delivery last night when she complained of labour pain. The nurses administered an injection and saline to her, but no doctor visited her. Within hours, she gave birth to a baby on her bed, but as she was not attended by any nurses or doctors, the newborn baby was found dead.
After the incident was noticed, the woman was immediately taken to the labour room where she gave birth to another stillborn baby. The family members alleged that despite repeated requests, not a single nurse or doctor attended to the patient on time, which led to the deaths of the twin babies.
They also alleged that when the patient complained of labour pain and gave birth to a baby on her hospital bed, the doctor was sleeping in her quarter. Even though the nurses sent an emergency call to the doctor, he did not respond, the family members alleged.
The incident has raised concerns about the quality of healthcare services in the region, and the authorities need to take immediate action to address the issue, a local resident said. The family members of the deceased babies have demanded justice and punishment for the medical staff responsible for the tragedy.
