This is the time for Pitri Paksha Shradh, preceding the autumnal Navratras, when ancestors are worshipped, and prayers offered for the repose of their souls. The ritual is considered even more important than the worship of God, because a person owes his physical birth to his lineage. After taking a dip in the Bhagirathi river, people, under guidance of Purohits performed ‘tarpan’ for their forefathers.

The day started with thousands of people paying obeisance to their forefathers on the banks of Bhagirathi and other rivers and water bodies across the district amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The early morning rendition of “Mahishasur Mardini” – a collection of shlokas and songs dedicated to Goddess Durga – was aired on the All India Radi (AIR), marking the beginning of the festive season.

Meanwhile, police had taken adequate security measures at each ghats across the district to prevent any untoward incident.
