BURDWAN, 22 JAN: Three young girls posing as patients were caught carrying firearms and ammunition inside their handbags by the police in Burdwan town.
Police official said the girls – all aged nearly 25 years, were identified as Poonam Solanki, Asha Sanjoy Solanki and Malati Mali. The Solanki sisters hailed from Railpar slum areas in Asansol (North) police station area while Malati was from Bandel, Hooghly.
According to the police, they were first detected roaming suspiciously in Lakshmipurmath business hub in Burdwan town yesterday. When quizzed, they said that they needed to visit a physician’s chamber. Then, the police said that the girls were further spotted at College Morh area and were detained by the civic police volunteers.
Hearing the incident, some lady constables from the Burdwan police station reached the site and searched their handbags. During search, one loaded country made pipegun was recovered from Asha’s bag. Two rounds of cartridges each from the handbags of Poonam and Malati were also recovered, a senior police officer said.
The police suspected that the young girls were operating as arms and ammunitions suppliers to the gangsters. The police also recovered Rs 4000 in cash from their possession.
Later, the police produced them before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Burdwan where the magistrate on hearing pleas remanded them in police custody for four days.
Another woman meanwhile was arrested from Curzon Gate location yesterday on charges of snatching a handbag of a trader. The police however was yet to find whether this woman had any link with the girls arrested for carrying arms and ammunition.
