According to forest officials two kangaroos were rescued from near Gajoldoba in Jalpaiguri on Friday night while two more kangaroos including the dead one were spotted at the Farabari Nepali area in the Dabgram forest range on Saturday, sending forest officials into a tizzy.

This comes nearly three weeks after two men were arrested trying to smuggle a kangaroo into West Bengal’s Alipurduar district.

Forest officials are perplexed as to how kangaroos were found in North Bengal, thousands of kilometres away from their natural habitat in Australia and New Guinea. An investigation has been initiated, Baikunthapur Forest Division Ranger Sanjay Dutta said. The animals had some critical injuries on their bodies after which they were immediately brought to Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri for further treatment, Mr Dutta added.

Hari Krishnan, divisional forest officer, Baikunthapur, “We got a tip-off and found the kangaroos in an abandoned state on the road leading to the forest. I’ve never seen kangaroos in North Bengal, not even in the zoo or the safari park. The kangaroos were found injured and were taken for treatment,” he said.

Located in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri District, Baikunthapur is a lowland forest region on the southern foothills of the Himalayas. This area is popular for the wild elephants and the Gajoldoba reservoir formed by the Teesta River barrage, and is home to several migratory birds. Situated in Jalpaiguri district, it is surrounded by Bangladesh in the south, Nepal in the east, and Bhutan in the north.
