KRISHNAGAR, 14 AUG: On the eve of India’s 78th Independence Day, the Union Government has announced service medals for 1,037 police personnel across various Central and State forces, recognizing their exceptional courage, dedication, and service. Among the honorees are three officers from West Bengal’s Ranaghat Police District, who have been awarded the Police Gallantry Medal for their valour during the Ranaghat Senco dacoity case.
The officers, Inspector Sanjib Senapati, Sub-Inspector Altab Hossain, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Ratan Kumar Roy, demonstrated extraordinary bravery during the operation, earning them this prestigious recognition. Mr. Kumar Sunny Raj, Superintendent of Police, Ranaghat Police District, commended the officers for their courageous actions, stating that their commitment to public safety has set a high standard for the entire force.
In a statement issued by the Union Home Ministry, it was revealed that a total of 214 personnel will be decorated with bravery medals, including one President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and 231 Police Medals for Gallantry (GM). The GM recipients include four firefighters and one civil defense personnel.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) received the highest number of bravery medals with 52 awards, followed by Jammu and Kashmir Police with 31, and 17 each for police personnel from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh also saw significant representation, with 15 and 12 bravery medals awarded, respectively.
The sole recipient of the President’s Medal for Gallantry, the highest police decoration for bravery, is Head Constable Chaduvu Yadaiah of the Telangana Police. Yadaiah’s remarkable courage was displayed on July 25, 2022, when he apprehended two notorious chain snatchers and arms traffickers. Despite being viciously attacked and repeatedly stabbed, Yadaiah did not loosen his grip on the criminals, ensuring their capture. His heroic actions, which left him hospitalized for 17 days, were lauded by the Home Ministry as an example of “rare gallantry.”
In addition to the bravery medals, the announcement also includes 94 President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service and 729 Police Medals for Meritorious Service. These medals recognize valuable service characterized by resourcefulness and devotion to duty, as well as a special distinguished record in police service.
The service medals are traditionally announced twice a year, on the occasions of Republic Day and Independence Day. The Police Gallantry Medal, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service are among the highest honors that can be bestowed upon police personnel in India, reflecting their commitment to maintaining law and order and protecting the public.
