KOLKATA, 4 MAY: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast warning of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in several areas of southern Bengal, starting from Sunday. Regions such as North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia are likely to experience these weather conditions. The gusty winds may reach speeds of 30-40 kmph initially.
According to IMD’s release on Friday, the weather pattern is expected to intensify from Monday, with thunderstorms anticipated in almost all districts of West Bengal. Additionally, the maximum temperature in the state is predicted to decrease gradually by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next four to five days.
The coastal areas of West Bengal are advised to exercise caution as squally weather, with maximum wind speeds reaching 45-55 kmph, is expected from Monday to Tuesday. The sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough during this period, prompting a warning for fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea.
In Kolkata, where the temperature soared to 39.2 degrees Celsius on Friday, partly cloudy skies prevailed. However, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are forecasted from Monday onwards.
Earlier alerts for a heatwave, categorized as ‘orange’ for eight districts, may be downgraded to a ‘yellow’ alert, expected to persist until Sunday. Light rainfall is anticipated in various districts, including East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia, starting Sunday.
The southern districts of Bengal are likely to witness light to moderate rain and thunderstorms with winds ranging from 40-50 mph from Monday onwards, continuing for several days.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Kalaikunda recorded the highest maximum temperature at 44.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Panagarh (42.9 degrees), Midnapore (42.5), Krishnanagar (41), Purulia (42.5), Bankura, and Burdwan (both 41.5).
In the hilly regions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, light to moderate rainfall persisted on Friday, expected to continue into the coming days with thunderstorms and gusty winds forecasted from Monday.
A ‘yellow’ alert for a heatwave has been issued in North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda districts, urging residents to take necessary precautions.
