BEHRAMPORE, 6 JAN: Like never before, the Trinamool Congress party in Murshidabad district celebrated the 67th birthday of Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee on 5 January.
While the TMC leaders and workers rallied behind her birthday bash in a big way, the opposition leaders like the CPIM state secretary, Surya Kanta Mishra and the BJP MP, Arjun Singh slammed Banerjee for allowing events which attract crowds making way for the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic.
The TMC MLA, Humayun Kabir made it big indeed when he presented one single piece of Bengal’s traditional sweetmeat popularly known as Chhanabora which was specially made to have 67 kg weight as a matching tribute to Banerjee, also the TMC’s founder, on her 67th birthday.
Sweet sellers’ forum has already urged the state government to apply for geographical indication or GI tag for Chhanabora which is said to have its origin in Murshidabad district.
Kabir organized the party at Salar town of his constituency, Bharatpur where he offered a jumbo six-layered cake, also weighing 67 kg, to his followers, sources said. The TMC MP Khalilur Rahaman of Jangipur constituency also held a similar event on the occasion of Mamata’s birth anniversary.
BJP leader, Arjun Singh alleged that Mamata Banerjee does not care Covid norms. “The Covid protocol is not for Mamata. She has ensured that it is for opposition parties only”, said Singh here today. The BJP MP, however, was all praise for the Behrampore MP, Adhir Chowdhury of the Congress party. “Adhirda is a veteran leader. I respect him”, said the BJP leader.
Significantly, Behrampore is the home turf of Chowdhury, the state Congress president. BJP wrested the Behrampore seat from Congress in the last Assembly polls. The TMC has no possibility to repeat the last civic polls’ victory of Kolkata corporation because Behrampore is not Kolkata, said Arjun Singh.
The CPIM leader, Surya Kanta Mishra also blamed the Mamata Banerjee government for Covid pandemic’s quick transition into third wave. The Covid guidelines of both the state and central governments are unscientific, Mishra said here today.
