KRISHNAGAR, 23 MAR: A 35-year-old Trinamul Congress leader was shot at by unidentified goons at Muragacha under Hanshkhali police station limits in Nadia tonight.
Police said that the victim Sahadeb Mandal, husband of Trinamul Congress panchayat member Anima Mandal received bullet injuries at his head when he was returning home from the local market at around 8.30 pm.
He was immediately taken to the Bogula hospital from where he was taken to the Saktinagar district hospital in Krishnagar. After examining his condition, the attending doctor referred him to a Kolkata hospital as his condition was critical.
This comes just two days after a TMC panchayat leader was killed in a bomb attack in Birbhum district after which eight persons, including six women and two children, were burnt to death.
Suvendu Biswas, a local TMC leader said the victim was chatting with his friends at the local market like other days tonight. When he was returning home, motorcycle borne unidentified assailants fired at his head from very close range and fled the scene soon after.
“We heard a gunshot and found Mandal lying in a pool of blood. We then rushed to him and rescued to the local hospital,” Mr Biswas said.
Kalyan Dhali, a TMC zilla-parishad member said, “Sahadeb was returning home on a motorbike. Three people riding a motorcycle were following him. When he reached near School ground, the motorcycle borne goons shot fire at his head and fled the scene. Sahadeb had a dispute with local BJP workers. A few months ago, trouble broke out between them. We suspect that BJP goons have committed this crime.”
The BJP leaders, however, brushed aside the allegation saying that it was the fall out of the internal feuds of Trinamul Congress.
Meanwhile, a large number of police contingents have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident. No person has been arrested yet, but police have initiated a probe into this matter.
