KOLKATA, 5 JUNE: Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday elevated her nephew and MP Abhishek Banerjee as the party’s all-India general secretary, the second-most important post in the organisation. The elevation of Abhishek, who is often referred to as the possible successor to Mamata Banerjee in the party, assumes significance as he happened to be the focal point of multiple attacks by the BJP’s top leadership during poll campaigns in the state.
There were several changes in Trinamul Congress rank and file and Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today held a meeting with the 18 members of working committee and thanked the party’s MPs and MLAs for the landslide victory of her party.
Abhishek Banerjee who after Mamata Banerjee helped the party to win 2021 election by conducting sustained campaign for the party was made today party’s all India General Secretary. The 33-year old leader emerged as the number two in the TMC in the run-up to the elections, turning out to be the most prominent campaigner after the supremo, often locking horns with BJP leader and the current Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, who was a former minister in the Mamata Banerjee cabinet before he switched sides ahead of the polls.
She also said that there should one member one post and some ministers who are holding district president post should be removed from dual responsibility.
So Subrata Bakshi, who was holding two posts as party’s state president and party’s all India general secretary will now be only party’s state president and Abhishek Banerjee was made party’s All India general secretary.
Film actress Sayani Ghosh,who contested as Trinamul Congress candidate in Asansol (South) and lost to BJP’s Agnimitra Paul was made Trinamul Youth Congress president in place of Abhishek Banerjee.
Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar was made the president of Trinamul Women Congress Cell instead of Chandrima Bhattacharya who is a state minister and given many portfolios.
Mr Purnendu Basu, former minister who did not contest this election but campaigned for the party was made president of Trinamul’s Khet Mazdoor committee.
While, Dola Sen is the president of all India trade unionwing of Trinamul Congress, Ritabrata Banerjee is made the state president of INTTUC.
Mala Roy is being made the president of Trinamul’s Bangajanani unit.
