BEHRAMPORE, 16 DEC: The Trinamool Congress party opened one all-women party office yesterday at Behrampore municipal town in Murshidabad district. More such party offices are going to come up as part of a pilot project of the party, said the TMC president of Behrampore, Narugopal Mukherjee.
A political party office which will be truly ‘for the women, by the women and of the women’ is quite an innovative idea of inclusive politics, Mukherjee said. The credit goes to Mamata Banerjee, the TMC president who set a precedent of inclusive politics by ensuring equitable participation of women in three-tier Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) in Bengal, said the TMC leader.
From now on, aggrieved women would be able to narrate their problems to female TMC leaders, instead of males, he said adding there are women who feel ashamed of disclosing very personal problems before male leaders of the party.
The TMC leaders here claimed that the party office exclusively run by women activists of TMC was the first of its kind in Bengal. Currently, women account for majority of elected members of TMC-led Murshidabad Zilla Parishad.
The president of TMC’s women wing in Murshidabad district, Sahanaz Begam said, “It’s a welcome move by our party. The effort intends to empower women in the domain of politics. We are greatly indebted to our leader, Mamata Banerjee who is a living inspiration for women interested in polity.”
The former chairman of Behrampore municipality, Nilratan Addhya of TMC was recently arrested on charge of outrage of a woman’s modesty. Though he was released on bail on the day of arrest, female TMC activists took out protest rallies the following day accusing him of unfair treatment to several women of the locality, sources said.
Behrampore is the home turf of the state Congress chief, Adhir Chowdhury known for his monopoly over female vote-bank here. But things are different now with the growing popularity of the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee among female electors, TMC leaders said adding the upcoming municipal election is going to be a game changer in Murshidabad district.
