MIDNAPORE, 4 JULY: The Trinamul Congress run Midnapore Municipality of West Midnapur district seems to turn a deaf ear to a mass deputation filed to the district magistrate regarding the dumping of garbage within the residential area during the Covid-19 pandemic. Huge dumps of garbage containing hazardous solid wastes, like plastic bags are lying just by the side of a DAV school right within a residential area named Saratpally. News in The Statesman was also published on this subject on 19 November 2020.
The residents of the locality in a mass deputation containing signatures of 187 persons wrote a memorandum to Dr. (Smt.) Rashmi Kamal, District Magistrate, on 13.11.2020, which stated that “they are facing lot of problems due to the all on a sudden newly created garbage dumping ground just adjacent to the boundary wall of the DAV Public School and several government offices including Public Health Engineering and State Water Resource and Investigation Department under municipal ward numbers 23 and 24 on the Dak Bungalow road in Saratpally”. The residents demanded the immediate “relocation of the dumping station outside the township as per the stipulations of Midnapore Municipality”.
After the deputation, the officer in charge of the municipal affairs section under the district magistrate on 11.12.2020 wrote to the executive officer of Midnapore Municipality “to take action immediately regarding the matter” (Letter bearing memo no 200/MA/2020 in possession of The Statesman). Since the municipal authorities neither enclosed the vacant site nor could prevent people to dump garbage in the aforesaid place the situation went back to square one and garbage continued to be dumped.
There was no effort on the part of the municipal authority to relocate the garbage dumping site outside the town. The officer in charge of the municipal affairs section again wrote on 26.02.2021 to the executive officer of Midnapore Municipality on the subject of the relocation of the “newly created municipal waste dumping ground outside the town” and sought an “action taken report” on the relocation of the dumping site (Letter with memo no.72/MA/2021 in possession of The Statesman).
