MIDNAPORE, 24 FEB: A Trinamul Congress activist was shot dead and two others were injured when bike-borne assailants attacked them with bombs and bullets at Abhirampur under Narayangarh police station limits in West Midnapore last night.
Police officials said the deceased has been identified as Souvik Doloi. He was declared brought dead at Kharagpur hospital. He sustained bullet injuries.
Another two persons –Sitaram Murmu and Amit Mondol who received bomb injuries have been admitted to the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital (MMCH).
According to local residents, the attack was carried out due to factional feuds between two groups of Trinamul Congress. “Souvik and two other TMC workers were sitting on a culvert at Abhirampur at around 9 pm when three men on a motorcycle appeared and hurled bombs and bullets at them. Local TMC leader Lakshmikanta Shit and his gang have been blamed for the attack. Lakshmikanta was recently made Trinamul area president by removing Nakphundi Murmu”, a local resident said.
Lakshmi is the main accused in the 2018 bomb blast at the Trinamool office in Makrampur. Naturally, taking him to the team created anger in the team. According to sources, after Laxmikant took charge, the followers of Nakphundi have become somewhat inactive.
However, allegations of sectarianism have been dispelled by the district TMC top leadership. Narayangarh Trinamul Block president Mihir Chandra claimed that BJP men had carried out the attack. There is no issue of TMC factionalism.
BJP district president Samit Das has denied all the allegations. He claimed it was the result of the TMC’s infighting. This was supposed to happen. At one time, Lakshmi Shit used to torture the common people by threatening them. Now he has come to power. The party can only create violence in the state, he said.
