KRISHNAGAR, 6 AUG: Two persons were feared drowned after a boat carrying five persons including a boatman capsized in the Kash Ganga of Pakhiralay under Purvasthali-2 block in East Burdwan this evening.
Local residents rescued the boatman –Madan Parui and two other tourists but two others went missing, police said.
According to the police, four persons named Dr Tanmay Sil Sharma of Dignagar, Tanay Majhi of Kanthalpota in Krishnagar, Saikat Chatterjee of Krishnagar and Sourav Bhattacharya of Sasthitala in Krishnagar went to Pakhiralay to enjoy the weekend day. They hired a boat and they were all under the influence of alcohol. As they were dancing, the boat suddenly capsized. The incident occurred when the boat was crossing Kash Ganga at around 4.30 pm. All the passengers including the boatman fell into the water.
Hearing the screams, local residents rushed to the site and many of them jumped into the river. They rescued the boatman, Tanmay Sil Sharma and Tanay Majhi but two others went missing. The rescued persons were immediately taken to the hospital where condition of one of them is critical.
One hearing the incident, police and local MLA rushed to the site and they engaged a local diver to trace the missing persons. But, the search operation could not continue for a long time due to scarcity of light.
