BEHRAMPORE, 31 OCT: Sukanta Saha, a young school teacher, was in tears but it was his tears of joy he failed to hide while narrating his regular travails of attending his school in Murshidabad district, about 80 km away from his home in Burdwan district. The reason of his happiness was that Utsashree, the online teacher transfer portal of Bengal government, helped him to secure his transfer enabling him to be posted at a school close to his permanent residence.
Attending a felicitation programme this week, he took release from Khenkul High School, his original place of posting, at Nabagram block in Murshidabad district. Through Utsashree portal of the state government, he has been transferred to Pindira High School at Mangalkote area which is about 6 km away from his home at Koshigram village of Katwa in Burdwan district.
For last 8 years of his teaching profession, he had to take the troubles of travelling at least 160 km (each working day in a round trip) by train, auto, toto etc. to attend his duty at school.
“When the school was in morning session weeks ahead of summer vacation, I had to wake up early in the morning (at about 3 a.m.) to take the train at Katwa station. Getting down at Lalbagh court railway station in Murshidabad district, I had to take either an auto or a toto vehicle (that too was not easily available always) to reach the school by 6 a.m.”, Saha said.
The journey of Renaul Haque, a clerical staff of Khenkul High School, was equally harrowing. A permanent resident of Khalisamari village under Bhagwangola-II block in Murshidabad district, Renaul had to travel at least 40 km daily (80 km in round trip between his school and home) to reach his school at Nabagram block via Lalbagh town and the Bhagirathi river.
The public transport modes he used to avail included either bus or auto to reach the railway station, the train to arrive at Lalbagh, then a ferryboat to cross the Bhagirathi and finally any kind of three wheelers available on the way. Through Utsashree, he has been transferred to Ranitala High School at Bhagwangola-II block, hardly 4 km away from his home.
Tarikul Islam, president of the government-aided Khenkul High School, said, “We are happy that with the introduction of Utsashree portal in July, 2021 many of such school teachers and non-teaching staff are being transferred and posted to schools close to their homes. Now we are in a position to install the electronic device for bio-metric attendance at the school.”
