Veteran CPM leader Harekrishna Samanta passes away at 82, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service

MIDNAPORE, 29 OCT: Harekrishna Samanta, a veteran CPI-M leader and former Sabhadhipati of undivided Midnapore District Zilla Parishad passed away at the age of 82 at a private hospital at 8.50 pm on Saturday, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering dedication to his party and the people he served.

Born in the heart of Sabang block, Mr. Samanta was not just a party leader; he was a man of principles and ideals, who dedicated his life to the betterment of society. After completing his education in Economics, he initially pursued a career in teaching. However, his passion for social change led him to actively engage in student movements during his academic years.

Mr. Samanta’s commitment to social causes became even more evident when he transitioned into a full-time party worker, leaving his teaching job behind. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, eventually serving as the Sabhadhipati of the undivided Midnapore Zilla Parishad. His tenure was marked by a focus on rural development through peasant movements and panchayats, emphasizing decentralized planning and addressing the issues of marginalized communities in gram sabhas.

One of his significant contributions was the promotion of sustainable agriculture and fisheries by advocating for the construction of large reservoirs and utilizing water resources efficiently. His vision transformed countless lives in the region, empowering local communities and ensuring a better future for generations to come.

Despite his influential position, Mr. Samanta led a remarkably simple life. Whether residing in Sabang or in Midnapore town, he remained grounded, earning the respect and admiration of everyone he met. His humility, coupled with his unwavering dedication to the party’s principles, made him a beloved figure not only among party workers but also among students, who regarded him with deep respect as a teacher.

The news of his demise has reverberated throughout the district, uniting people from all walks of life in grief. Regardless of caste, color, or religion, the late leader was beloved by the masses, earning the respect of both supporters and political opponents. Today, the district bid farewell to a leader who transcended party lines, touching the hearts of countless individuals.

This morning, a wave of mourning swept through the Sabang block area as the late leader’s mortal remains were taken to his home in Mohar and then to the Sabang party office. An outpouring of grief was witnessed as ordinary citizens, students, and even leaders from opposition parties paid their respects, reflecting the profound impact he had on the community.

At 9 am, the late leader’s body was brought to the district party office of the CPIM party in Midnapore, where leaders from the district, along with the district secretary, offered garlands and paid their last respects, draping his remains with the blood flag of the party. In a final gesture of generosity, in accordance with his last wish, his mortal remains were donated to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital to further medical research.
