WB government proposes development of sustainable model city in New Town-Rajarhat area

KOLKATA, 10 MARCH: The West Bengal government has proposed to develop a model city at Sector VI in New Town-Rajarhat area, with a focus on environmental sustainability and modern amenities. State urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim announced the plan in the Assembly today, stating that the city will be designed with the most modern amenities and built to international standards.

The draft plan for the industrial township was prepared by the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, and is currently being studied by the department. Mr Hakim also highlighted the success of the department in developing the New Town Kolkata Township as a modern sustainable city.

In addition, the department has taken up several initiatives to improve urban infrastructure in the state. Mr Hakim announced that the department has set a goal to supply filtered water to 100% of households in the urban area by 2023. The project has been estimated to cost Rs 7,172 crore and will help to reduce the use of ground water. The department has also proposed a scheme to use water from an existing natural water body in Basirhat at a cost of Rs 4.41 crore.

The urban development and municipal affairs department has also launched a comprehensive waste management scheme called Mission Nirmal Bangla Urban. The plan includes eliminating open defecation, eradicating manual scavenging, and implementing scientific management of solid and liquid waste, as well as promoting healthy sanitation practices.

The proposed model city in New Town-Rajarhat area is a step towards creating a sustainable and modern urban landscape in West Bengal, and the initiatives taken by the department towards improving infrastructure and sustainable development will further enhance the quality of life for residents in the state.
