KRISHNAGAR, 24 AUG: The Trinamul Congress-supported teachers’ organisation, WBCUPA, along with the Student Council at Kalyani University today submitted a deputation with nine-point charter of demands to the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar. The initiative stems from the heart-wrenching and untimely passing of Swapnadip, a brilliant student at Jadavpur University, who reportedly fell victim to severe ragging on campus.
The poignant event unfolded today at Kalyani University as approximately 500 students, researchers, and educators assembled to express their outrage and stand in solidarity with Swapnadip’s bereaved family. The demonstration commenced with a solemn march, originating from the administration building, which encircled the science faculty before returning to the administrative premises. The mourners marched in silence, carrying their collective message of mourning and solidarity.

Following the march, a protest demonstration was staged within the university’s administrative complex. The gathering, comprising faculty members, researchers, and student representatives, conveyed a written appeal to Professor Amlendu Bhnuiya, the Vice-Chancellor, and Dr. Devanshu Roy, the Registrar of Kalyani University. The appeal outlined a series of pressing concerns aimed at enhancing campus security and student well-being.
They demanded stringent measures to restrict unauthorized access to the university campus, ensuring a safer environment for all students. The installation of CCTV cameras in student residences and public spaces on campus was called for, along with a prompt upgrade to the existing camera systems. A request was also made to issue new pictorial identity cards to teachers, officials, educational staff, students, and researchers for improved identification and security purposes.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bhnuiya addressed the gathering, acknowledging the gravity of the raised concerns. He reassured swift action while considering all relevant factors.
Prof. Sujay Kumar Mondal, Secretary of the WBCUPA at Kalyani University, extended heartfelt condolences to Swapnadeep’s family. He stressed the importance of preventative measures to avert future tragedies and urged alignment with State Government and UGC directives.
