KOLKATA, 6 MARCH: A day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mega-rally at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground, BJP’s central election committee on Saturday released the first list of candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections. General Secretary Arun Singh said, “BJP’s central election committee has approved the names of candidates on 57 out of 60 seats for West Bengal Assembly elections.”
Arun Singh also said Suvendu Adhikari will contest the election from the Nandigram seat. The former TMC heavyweight, who has recently joined BJP, will be facing the chief minister Mamata Banerjee who has already moved her constituency from Bhawanipore to Nandigram.
Out of 57 seats announced, the Baghmundi seat has been given to AJSU for West Bengal Assembly elections.
The party has pitched former Indian cricketer Ashoke Dinda from Moyna against TMC’s Sangram Kumar Dolui. Ex-IPS officer Bharati Ghosh will be contesting from Debra against TMC candidate Humayun Kabir who also happens to be an Ex-IPS office.
The BJP in its release said that a meeting of the Central Election Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party was held on 4th March under the chairmanship of party president Jagat Prakash Nadda and in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Minister of Road Transport, Nitin Gadkari and all other members of Central Election Committee. The names have been approved by the Central Election Committee of the party.
Addressing the media in New Delhi, BJP General Secretary Arun Singh said that jungle raaj prevails in the state and voters have made up their mind to throw out the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamul Congress (TMC) government. Singh asserted that the BJP is set to form government in the state.
Mamata Banerjee, meanwhile, on Friday, released the list of TMC candidates for the upcoming assembly polls for 291 seats with emphasis on youths, minority, women and backward communities.
Three candidates of the Bimal Gurung faction of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), an ally of the TMC, will be contesting from the remaining three seats in Darjeeling.
The announcement comes amidst considerable unrest among the sitting MLAs of the Trinamul Congress whose names did not figure in the party’s list of candidates made public yesterday.
