KRISHNAGAR, 18 FEB: In a tragic incident, a 23-year-old woman named Priya Ghosh from Gandharajpur under Karimpur police station limits in Nadia allegedly died after consuming an abortion pill on Saturday. The family members reported that she had searched for the name of the abortion pill on her mobile phone and later purchased it from a local shop, hoping to abort the foetus. However, in the early hours of the day, she suffered complications and encountered heavy bleeding. She was immediately taken to the local hospital, where she succumbed to her illness.
The police have initiated an unnatural death investigation, and the body has been sent to the Saktinagar district hospital for autopsy. Doctors have stressed that abortion pills should never be taken without the supervision of a medical professional. Taking pills over the counter is extremely unsafe and can be life-threatening, they said.
One of the doctors explained that there is a protocol to know how many weeks pregnant a woman is and if the pregnancy is confirmed. Without proper supervision, one might not know the difference and could land in a complication which could lead to heavy internal bleeding, low haemoglobin, and even hypovolemic shock. It is also essential to note that if the pregnancy is beyond seven weeks, the cut-off for taking the abortion pill, the foetus will not get aborted with the pill, leading to an incomplete job and prolonged bleeding.
The doctor advised that if a woman takes an abortion pill for some reason and then realizes that it was a mistake, she could still reach out to a doctor immediately. The abortion pills should always be prescribed by a gynaecologist or a registered medical practitioner, making sure the pregnancy is within 12 weeks and by doing an ultrasound showing the pregnancy is only within the uterus.
This tragic incident is a reminder of the importance of seeking medical advice and supervision in cases related to reproductive health.
