KRISHNAGAR, 1 SEP: Yet another person surrendered before the Krishnagar District Judge’s court in connection with Dharma Mandal murder case in Chapra today. With this surrender, three persons have surrendered before the court and ten persons have been arrested by the police and CBI so far.
According to sources, one Kiran Biswas, a Trinamul Congress gram sabha member at Hridaypur in Chapra surrendered before the chief judicial magistrate court in Krishnagar today. He has been charged under section 341/325/326/307/34 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and additional sections 354B and 302 of IPC have also been charged against him. The magistrate remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days and he will again be produced on 14 September.
The CBI officials, who are conducting probe into the post-poll violence in Nadia, had arrested one Kalu Sheikh and Biswajit Biswas, both are Trinamul Congress workers in connection with the murder case.
During the arrest the CBI officials faced a stiff resistance from the villagers as they were carrying out searches at various locations. The angered villagers had thrown mud before the officials and ransacked one of their vehicles. They also punctured the tyres of the vehicle. Later, Chapra police and CRPF jawans on hearing the incident reached the site and rescued the CBI officials.
A day after this incident, panic spread in the locality and among the persons who are hiding since the incident occurred, one Bijay Ghosh and Ashima Ghosh, both are TMC panchayat members of Hridaypur gram panchayat surrendered before the court.
Mandal was brutally attacked by a group of local residents on 14 May and he succumbed to his injuries on 16 May in a Kolkata hospital.
