Police officials said the explosion occurred at around 8 am at a two-storey building that belonged to one Ashim Mondol. In the explosion, the house owner Ashim Mondol, one woman and another person, who was working at the factory died. Their bodies have been recovered while the injured persons have been sent to the hospital.

“The condition of one of the injured is ‘critical’. One of his hands was ripped off in the blast,” said a senior police officer.

According to the local people, Mondol had been running an illegal firecracker factory in the locality for the last ten years. “This is a residential area and we had the fear that this kind of explosion could take place. We requested him several times and also informed the police, but nothing happened,” a local resident said.

Local people said the magnitude of the blast was so high that the window panes of some of the neighbouring houses broke and the bodies were thrown nearly 200 metres away from the blast site.

According to the police, the blast took place on the roof and the concrete roof collapsed. “We have initiated a probe into this matter. The bodies have been sent to the hospital for post-mortem and we have asked the forensic officials to collect samples. Once they will give the report, we will be able to understand the nature of explosives,” said a senior police officer.
