MIDNAPORE, 29 JAN: The three-day West Midnapore district inter-college sports meet commenced on Wednesday at Raja Narendra Lal Khan Women’s College (Autonomous), reaffirming the growing emphasis on holistic education in the higher education sector.


Organised with the support of the West Bengal government’s Higher Education Department, the district-level sporting event will continue till Friday, bringing together 323 students from 16 colleges across West Midnapore. Institutions including Belda College, Bhatter College, Midnapore College, Debra College, Keshpur College and Ghatal College are participating, with enthusiastic involvement from both male and female athletes across multiple disciplines.
The competition was formally inaugurated in the presence of Vidyasagar University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deepak Kumar Kar, along with a host of academic dignitaries. Among those present were Professor Anuradha Mukhopadhyay, chairperson of the college governing body, Debra College principal Dr Rupa Dasgupta, state government observer Dr Krishnendu Pradhan, former Gop College principal Dr Jayashree Laha, Bhatter College principal Dr Giridhari Panda, Vidyasagar University examination controller Dr Tanushree Tulsiyan Samanta, and Professor Indranil Acharya, besides several faculty members and students.

Welcoming the guests, college principal Dr Swapna Ghorai expressed gratitude to the Higher Education Department for its financial assistance, which she said made the successful organisation of the event possible.
Addressing the gathering, Professor Kar said such inter-college sports competitions play a crucial role in motivating students—especially women—to actively participate in sports alongside academics.

Organisers expressed optimism that the meet would foster physical fitness, healthy competition and stronger bonds among higher education institutions in the district.
